Let’s be realistic… iPhone and iPad haven’t fallen from the skies… but indeed were created at «Job’s garage». It means Apple products are not ideal as they might look. All Apple products may glitch or crash as the rest of gadgets. If you got to the point when your iPhone won’t turn ON, read this article to the very end. Let’s figure out all possible causes and find the right solution. Don’t panic, relax and keep reading… We are going to fix it together!
- If iPhone was accidentally dropped in water – read this article
Obviously there should be a reason if an iPhone stopped working… but it’s not possible to give a single solution for every possible cause. It all depends on symptoms coming from your device. In this article we are going to cover most common of them.
iPhone won’t turn on… I see black screen only!
I personally never came across such problem, but many other users had their iPhones stuck in “switched off” state. At the same time it looks like the phone doesn’t respond to physical buttons. Whatever buttons you press, iPhone screen stays black. Usually this problem is caused by fully drained iPhone’s battery or crashed software (iOS). In a very rare case the firmware may get corrupted or internal components fail, but we’ll talk about this a bit later. To sort out your iPhone, try to do the following steps.
If none of the above helped to turn your iPhone ON, the problem might be with one of the following:
- iPhone internal components failed
- charger or USB cable failed
It’s time to find another charger and give it a try. I’m not making fuss with all these chargers and cables, since I recently scrapped an Apple’s original USB cable. That cable wouldn’t charge my iPhone for more than 60%. It’s normal for cable to get damaged during intense usage and stop letting enough power trough… Even if it’s sold by Apple. If you really care about your iPhone, I highly recommend to USE ORIGINAL APPLE CHARGERS ONLY. I can say from my own experience that cheap Chinese chargers are easy to melt down and even catch a fire. It concerns all kind of chargers (220V, 110V and 24V).
When application crash…
It’s rare but still possible to find an iOS app that stopped responding or just hangs. In this case it may help to force that App out of the device’s memory. To do so double press the HOME button to see all running apps, then swipe up in front of the app that hanged. The problematic application will be removed from the memory and then you can try starting it again.
This kind of problem usually occurs on older devices (such as iPhone 4S or iPad 3), and may be caused by CPU overload or running out of RAM.
iPhone wouldn’t respond to any buttons
Few times I’ve had my iPhone 4S not responding to any physical buttons. iPhone would have a frozen screen with an image of last used app. If you find your device in same condition, just do a Hard Reset (don’t know how? – read here). If you have no time to read, then press and hold HOME + POWER buttons for at least 15 seconds until iPhone reboots. If you have iPhone 7, then press and hold POWER + "-" Volume
Permanent iPhone boot loop
Another “popular” problem is when iPhone is stuck in endless Boot Loop. In other words, your iPhone tries to boot up, but in the middle of the process it crashes and starts booting up over and over again… Usually you would see an Apple logo on the screen for some time, then black screen, then logo again… and so on. Most common cause of the problem is failed iOS update/restore or crashed Jailbraking process. In most cases this problem can be sorted by restoring an iPhone in RECOVERY MODE. To do so follow these steps:
What to do if none of the above worked?
If nothing of the above worked for you, there is one more thing to try – recover the iPhone in DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode. Follow the link for a step-by-step guide. It’s not complicated as it might sound.
What? Still having problems with your iPhone or iPad? Then I would suggest you to visit an Apple Care specialist or at least some Phone Repair shop (only if Apple Care is not available in your region).
Today I tried to gather all possible cases when iPhone won’t turn on or start up. I hope one of the solutions helped you to bring the phone back to life. If not, please describe your situation in comments below. We’ll try to find another solution just for you.
